Global Organics tinned food

We’ve been doing as much research as we can on finding organic tinned food without BPA in the linings. We can confirm that unfortunately, the tinned food at Global Organics does contain BPA in their linings (as of January 2012)

Their press release states in part, “Test results from the can manufacturer show that the levels of BPA are well below the International Standards set.” and also “Therefore in conclusion, human exposure to BPA from can coatings is minimal and poses no known risk to human health. Can coatings have been and continue to be recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.K. Food Standards Agency, the EC Scientific Committee on Food and other government bodies worldwide”

So, tests show the levels are safe, but if you’re removing all BPA from your life, you’ll need to give this brand of tinned food a wide berth.

Breast Cancer Fund do BPA study in tinned food

While we knew this already, it’s so great to see more coverage in the media about BPA being in the linings of tinned food.  In this Sydney Morning Herald article, they talk about illness & disease that can come from the regular consumption of BPA. These include:-

While this was a US study, in Australia, Choice did their own BPA study on tinned food and found that 33 out of the 38 products tested contained BPA in them. Read more about this 2010 study here.

While the baby bottle and water bottle market have self-regulated (for the most part) in Australia, I’m afraid the food industry have not followed suit. It’s about time food manufacturers stopped putting this harmful toxin in to tinned food, some of which gets fed to children.

Lunch Boxes – inside & out

You’ve got your hands on a bpa free lunch box. Regardless of whether it’s bpa free plastic, stainless steel or glass, what’s sitting in front of you is still, alas, an empty lunch box!

We have recently stumbled upon a great new website, Mum’s Lunch. It’s choc-full of favourite lunch recipes for kids & adults alike and features recipes from some of Australia’s leading chefsJacques Reymond, Adam D’Sylva from Coda Restaurant, Frank Camorra from MoVida, Maggie Beer from The Cook and the Chef on ABC TV, Martin Boetz & George Calombaris from Masterchef.

The idea is simple, you’ll receive yummy recipes with a well balanced morning snack, lunch & afternoon shack to keep you excited about lunch. The site has a low subscription fee of $39.90 per year (or 77 cents per week) which is a bargain.

Is Brita BPA Free?

For the life of me, I simply CANNOT fathom why BRITA don’t advertise the BPA status of their water jugs, water filters and water bottles all over their packaging and their website.

I have been using Brita on and off for years now, both with the jugs and the filters you screw on to your tap. I have looked pretty hard for the information and had trouble finding it without putting on my detective hat. I finally gave in and just wrote to them.

I always had concerns that the clear hard plastic in Brita Jugs was actually polycarbonate. I can confirm that it’s NOT. It’s SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile). SAN is BPA Free. Some lids and the cartridges are made form Polypropylene – again, BPA Free.

You can find the information on the FAQ section of the Brita site. I have also copied the reply I received from Brita below (this is not edited).

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are pleased to advise that all materials used in the manufacture of BRITA products are certified as highest food grade quality. The plastics used are tested and certified that no leaching of chemicals will occur. So you can use your BRITA system with confidence.

All BRITA jugs (pot and funnel), are made of SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile, a transparent, rigid styrenic plastic offering high chemical resistance,) and some lids and the cartridge are made of PP. Neither materials release any Bisphenol A, all are BPA free.

All BRITA materials are certified food grade quality and meet the corresponding positive lists for plastics in food/water contact. Tests include migration tests according to applicable legislation. For BRITA jugs and cartridges we can confirm that there can be no Bisphenol A release.

Your BRITA jug can be put out for recycling if your council has plastic recycling. However, it is not graded for recycling at this stage. We feel that by owning a BRITA, the amount of bottled water that we prevent from being dumped (150 litre bottles for every BRITA cartridge) is a significant eco benefit.

You can find further information about BRITA products on our website www.brita.com.au

whereyou will also find the reference to BPA under FAQ – Jug & Casks.

I trust this information has been of assistance to you. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further enquiry.

BRITA are available to purchase at most K-Mart stores, supermarkets such as Coles, and also places like Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Bing Lee, Officeworks and many other places. Visit the stockists page on BRITA to find your nearest location.

Bioitalia organic tinned tomatoes

We’ve been buying and road testing a large variety of organic food for the new category in our store, Shop Naturally. It’s been lots of fun, as you can imagine.

This week we purchased the Bioitalia Organic Tinned Tomatoes from one of our suppliers. It was very hard to get information on the product, so we just bought them and cracked them open.

They were a nice rich colour and the taste just fine, but I was very disappointed to see the white lining in the tin. While I can’t say this with 100% certainty, white linings inside canned goods usually means there’s bpa in the lining.
UPDATE 22nd Oct 2011 – The Spiral Foods tomatoes which we have confirmed are BPA Free also have a white lining. At the moment, we have no confirmation one way or the other whether the Bioitalia tomato tin lining has BPA in it or not.

If you’re looking for tinned food with no bpa lining, stay away from the Bioitalia organic tinned tomatoes until we cna confirm their BPA status.

While we haven’t tasted them yet (that’s coming soon), we can confirm that Spiral Foods are bpa free in the packaging of all of the products we’ll be stocking, including their tinned tomatoes.

We discovered two fantastic ranges of products this week from Human Gear, the GoToob and GoTubb.

The GoTubb is a small round container that can be opened with one hand and suits pills, vitamins, loose change, MP3 player earphones and all manner of bits and pieces.

Distributed by Sea to Summit in Australia, we found them online for retail customers at www.hiking.com.au and www.travelgear.com.au

Spiral Foods BPA Free packaging

Getting information from manufacturers & distributors about the BPA status of their packaging is next to impossible, especially when it comes to tinned food. We were pleasantly surprised to find out this week that organic food company Spiral Foods use BPA Free packaging for their products, including their tinned goods.

We have sampled a small selection of their range and here’s what we thought.

Click on the packet for more infoThe Brown Rice Chips feel like prawn crackers in your mouth. That beautiful light bubbly texture that starts to melt in your mouth if you leave them sit on your tongue.

They have Nori in them for added flavour. Let’s just say I don’t like sushi or fishy tastes, so when I opened up the packet I wasn’t sure what to expect. Ok, I thought I’d open them, eat 1 and then hand the packet to my staff to eat. Instead, I ate one, let them have a couple and snatched the packet back. The Nori taste is mild and pleasant and it’s super hard not to eat the whole packet.

They taste like thin, crunchy mini corn cakes with a hint of nuttiness to them. One of our staff thought there was a hint of broccoli. I didn’t think so, so since kids don’t like broccoli, let’s say there isn’t any!! They’re nice and crunchy and can easily be eaten out of the packet or would equally be at home in a bowl next to some kind of dip.

At Shop Naturally, we’ll shortly be stocking a wide range of Spiral Foods, including the chips mentioned above, their best selling soy milk, coconut oil and a host of other goodies.

Joseph Joseph Homewares are BPA Free

When researching the Joseph Joseph range of homewares last year, we wrote to them and specifically asked if all their products are BPA Free. The answer was yes.

Joseph Joseph have an innovative range of homewares, unlike any other on the market. Best known for their Index Chopping Board sets and Elevate Utensils, some of their lesser known products are just as cool (pardon the pun!).

The Joseph Joseph Ice Cube Tray allows you to get ONE ice cube out at a time, no more greasy mits on your ice at the BBQ. Just give the tray a gentle twist (picture 1), squeeze the white lug (close up picture 3) and the ice cube simply drops in to your glass (picture 2) as long as you have a decent aim :)

Available in 4 colours (white, blue, pink & green), each tray holds 12 cubes and can be put in the dishwasher for easily cleaning.

BPA dangers on 60 minutes

We are always thrilled when the mainstream media stands up and pays attention to the dangers of Bisphenol-A, especially when it comes to the health & wellbeing of babies & children.

Last night, 60 minutes did a story on the dangers of BPA. To read the transcript, click on the links below.

*It is important to note that while the ‘which plastics are safe’ guide says that #7 is bad, this is not true of all #7′s.

#7 means OTHER. It does NOT mean polycarbonate exclusively. One of the safest plastics on the market, Tritan Eastman, used to make leading brand bottles like the Camelbak Better Bottle range are all made from #7 Tritan Eastman plastic and they are BPA Free and safe to drink from.

It is vital that you check with the retailer or manufacturer for any #7 product for confirmation of the type of plastic used.

We thank the owner of Shop Naturally for the information on the Camelbak water bottles.
